WHAT IS HOSPICE?
Hospice is not about how you die. it's about how you live. Hospice is a compassionate, patient centered approach to medical care and support for patients and families facing end-of-life issues. We seek to maintain dignity, quality of life and provide physical comfort, as well as emotional and spiritual comfort for both the patient and their family.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR HOSPICE CARE?
Hospice care is for people with a terminal illness who want comfort care rather than curative treatment or if the patient no longer benefits from curative care. It is time to consider hospice care when one or more of these circumstances apply:
• Loss of function and physical decline
• Increase in hospitalizations
• Dependence on others to assist with most activities of daily living, such as toileting, feeding and dressing.
• Increase in emergency room visits for the same medical reason
• Continuing weight loss, more than 10% of previous body weight
• Multiple diseases
Each disease has its own Medicare criteria for hospice eligibility, but there must be a life-limiting illness with a prognosis of six months or less from a physician and all parties need to agree that hospice care is appropriate.
WHO PAYS FOR HOSPICE CARE?
The entire cost of hospice services is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare, Medi-Cal, and other commercial plans. The services include all members of the hospice care team, medication, and durable medical equipment required for the relief of pain, and the comfort of the patient. In most cases, there is no out-of-pocket expenses to the patient.
